about

A River A Bed Half Empty is my wordless love letter to cycling (mostly) around SoCal, a hobby I picked up 15 years ago. It's a soundtrack -- a series of soundscapes mapping out these exquisite routes.

Turn it up and ride along with me.

The Etymology Of Tagalog
- Zosimo Quibilan, Jr.

Sometimes a corpse turns up. Maybe traces
of a past life -- a left combat boot, an unused

sanitary pad, misshapen water bottles,
muddy cigarette packs, lighters, a rusty balisong,

shreds of repurposed election campaign tarp,
bacon-topped boxer briefs. You peddle this idea

to yourself to remember that this empty path
leads to the dam. You keep your eyes wide

open to suggestions of a water recreation park,
several fairways, tunnels under the 60, the 10.

Lactic acid-willing, faith allows you to reach Seal Beach
and back and make you realize it’s not empathy

you’ve come looking for anymore. The brushfire season wind
whispers niceties like, it's perfect, this SoCal weather,

the sun always forgives, always gives.
Sometimes familiar words float

in dry drafts - Kabayan, taga-saan
ka sa atin? Astig ng batalya mo. Carbon?

You pedal on and keep tabs of unkempt stables, half pitched
tents, figures dragging heavier baggage than yourself. You count

your cadence, too and breathe precisely. You cover 23 miles today
and log it with a toast and sear your lips with water bottle warmth.

Kudos, you’ve traveled thousands of miles, learning nothing,
ending up next to a river again, a bed half empty again.
